L.A.'s Stars At Night Make Sacramento Feel Like A Hometown Gig
Stars At Night is currently on tour with Le Butcherettes and last Wednesday night they opened the show at Sacramento’s Goldfield Trading Post and as is often the case with opening bands in cities where they are not know, except for the people at the front of the stage, not many seemed to care, but after the first few chords and beats, they could not be denied and quickly had the whole place cheering for them.
Before the show some people asked me who was the opening band and when I tried to describe Stars At Night, I actually found it hard to describe them because they are a mixture of alternative, punk, heavy metal and pure power, so all I could say was: “they are a band that has to be experienced live and I can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed.” After the first song, those who asked me about the band were giving me thumbs up or nodding their heads in approval.
With the always beautiful and elegant, Seleste on lead guitar providing the riffs, rhythm and power chords; Joana on drums, but drums that could easily be described as a locomotive coming to you at full speed and reminiscent of the wild antics of The Who’s Keith Moon, but the powerful poise of Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham; on bass, Liz is somehow able to contain all the power in place and keeps the locomotive from coming off the rails, while up front, Janelle brings a combination of sweetness and raw power with an endearing charisma that allows her to easily connect with the crowd, but once she is into the song, she seems possessed by the moment, once we put all these forces together, Stars At Night is a beautiful cacophony of sound, raw energy, musical irreverence and at the same time, they have such a charming vibe about them that you end up being enchanted by their presence and music.
At the Goldfield Trading Post, after the first song it felt as if Stars At Night was playing in front of hometown crowd as the audience were very connected and open to this new band that most had never heard before and such was the atmosphere that the band felt free to improvise and even try a cover of Cindy Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and the girls on stage and the rest of the audience had a great deal of fun at the Goldfield Trading Post.
