On the cool Thursday night of August 3rd, 2023, fans from Southern California and nearby areas flocked to the outdoor and beautiful North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in the city of Chula Vista. Complete with colorful hair and eccentric outfits that paid tribute to characters from movies like A Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, and Batman, they were there to witness the greatness of the ever-iconic, Danny Elfman.

An additional treat for the audience that opened the night, was American electronic group, Boy Harsher. Dressed in all black, the duo got the fans started with their sultry, sexy, and intense sound. Vocalist Jae Matthews seduced the crowd into getting up on their feet to dance. As they ended their set, she thanked an excited crowd, and teased about the next artist when she said “We all know who we’re ALL really here to see!”

Mr. Elfman walked onto the stage and immediately pleased the fans by removing his shirt before approaching the microphone. An orchestra, a choir, and an all-star rock band joined him on stage. The visuals that the fans had anticipated instantly came to life. His theatrical and uncanny movements matched his sexy and sinister appearance. Images and scenes from beloved films displayed on the big screen while the soundtracks were rendered by the beautiful orchestra causing the fan’s reactions to elevate. Movies such as Batman, Mars Attacks, and even The Simpsons were in exhibit as Danny stood observing his masterpieces unfold. The night went on with an array of classics from his solo work. But the all-time favorites truly made the audience burst. “This is Halloween” from the Nightmare Before Christmas film score and “Dead Man’s Party” from his time with Oingo Boingo, amongst many others, proved why he is the epic and legendary artist that he is.

Throughout the night and amongst the 33-song setlist, songs and sounds fluctuated from rap to metal to pop. The recently turned 70-year-old undoubtedly projects an extraordinary energy. It was a beautiful night of music, art, and nostalgia.
